Our Family "Rules"!

Well...I think our family "rules", but I know I'm biased. I've been so impressed by all the awesome "Family Rules" signs that I've been seeing, like the ones I've seen here and here. I decided I wanted to make my own version, but wanted to make it a bit more "kid friendly" so that they could actually read what the "rules" were, hence making it easier for me as a Mom to remind them. This is what I ended up with, I am really happy with how it turned out! Would you believe me if I told you I paid $0 to make it, and only used what I had on hand? It's true! Let me show you how!

Ok, so what does this bookcase have to do with our sign? How about you use part of it, say a shelf to make your sign? That is what I did! I had an old white bookcase that I was getting rid of, but set aside one of the shelves, free sign!

I started the sign by covering it with my border paper, which I used above. I used just one piece of scrapbook paper for the entire border, and even had a bit left over. I just used a few coats of matte Mod Podge to adhere it to the board.

Then I started getting my letters ready. I wanted all black lettering on my sign. I didn't have enough stickers to do an entire sign, so I decided to mix up my lettering. I used stamping, stickers, chipboard and foam letters. My foam and chipboard letters weren't black to begin with but a quick coat of acrylic paint got them ready. After I painted them, I just covered them with a quick coat of matte acrylic sealant.I layed out my papers and made sure to vary the way they were mounted. Some were torn, some edged with decorative scissors and some were just straight cut across. They were affixed to the board with the same Mod Podge.

I really liked how the various styles of letters looked on the sign. It mixed it up, but since they were all black it didn't look too busy. Overall I was thrilled with how it turned out. The kids like it as well, and it's come in handy several times already in the few days that it's been in the living room.

  1. Thanks so much for linking up this great family rules board! I loved the phrases you put on there - just great!

Also, thanks for your entry yesterday! I love the before and after photos on the two posts. Don't you just love it when the homemaker adrennaline rush kicks in and you can move anything and hang anything without help? Hubby came in one day to find all the sofas moved about. He was impressed and a little shocked at just how strong a determined housewife can be :)

    have a great day!
